In the article, dvm360's Australian correspondent Phil Tucak explores why founder Dallas McMillan BVSc, BSc(Vet) — a veterinarian of 25 years — decided to build the clinical software he always wished existed.

The Documentation Burden

Anyone who has practised veterinary medicine knows the feeling: you've just had a brilliant consultation — picked up a subtle heart murmur, caught an early splenic mass on palpation, walked a worried owner through a complex prognosis — and then you sit down to document it.

The software in front of you doesn't follow your clinical reasoning. It's built around billing codes and appointment slots. The nuance of what just happened in the consult room gets compressed into a few lines of free text that nobody will ever meaningfully search, audit, or learn from.

That gap — between what a veterinarian knows and what the software allows them to record — is what drove Dallas to start building. As he told dvm360: “So much of the job is now record keeping, so if we can streamline that to give clinicians back even 30 minutes a day, that's a big impact.”

Problem-Oriented, Not Billing-Shaped

VetSorcery is built around two principles that most platforms have drifted away from: the Problem-Oriented Medical Record (POMR) — where every diagnostic, treatment, and recheck is anchored to a named clinical problem, not a billing line item — and genuine vitals tracking. Everything else sits on top of that clinical spine.

Open by Design

A key theme in the dvm360 feature is VetSorcery's commitment to openness. The integration layer is documented on public Git with no vendor lock-in. A public SDK means clinics or third-party developers can build what they need — from custom device integrations to speciality-specific workflows.

As Dallas shared with dvm360: “What I'd like to see evolve with VetSorcery is voice-first notetaking to become the default, not a novelty. And structured clinical data to become usable for outcome tracking, audit, and research — without double data entry.”

Paris and Stirling

When dvm360 asked for a photo to accompany the feature, Dallas didn't send a corporate headshot. He sent an old photo of himself with Paris and Stirling — his dogs, now passed — because they represent the reason he builds.

It's a sentiment that resonates with every veterinary professional who went into this profession for the love of animals and found themselves buried in paperwork instead. VetSorcery exists to close that gap.

What's Next

Being featured in dvm360 is a milestone, but it's a starting point.
